Black★★Rock Shooter DAWN FALL (ブラック★★ロックシューター DAWN FALL, Burakku Rokku Shūtā DAWN FALL) is a TV anime series based on the eponymous original character design. The project was first announced on September 16, 2021 with a visual illustrated by huke.[1]
In addition to terrestrial television broadcast in Japan, the anime series, which began airing on April 3, 2022,[2] is also available to Disney Plus for Asia-Pacific region.[3]
Plot[]
The year is 2062 A.D. It has been twenty years since the failure of a massive labor automation project. The artificial intelligence at its core of the project, Artemis, had chosen to attack humanity, and the Earth was devastated as a result.
A girl named Empress wakes up at the base of an underground research facility. She is one of three surviving protectors of mankind, but she has no memory of her past. All she knows is what the Colonel of the Peacebuilding Forces tells her.
Empress's mission is to destroy the Orbital Elevator that will connect the moon and the Earth with each other before it can be completed by Artemis. If it is completed, then hordes of giant mechanized forces being mass-produced on the moon will descend upon the Earth. Those who stand in her way are her supposed allies, Dead Master and Strength; the Unmanned Forces led by Artemis; and Smiley of the Education Institution.
Empress and the Colonel head for the elevator in the midst of various intersecting objectives. What awaits them at their destination is...[4][5]

Development[]
Hiroyasu Shinohara of TMS Entertainment had previously worked with screenwriter Makoto Fukami on Resident Evil: Vendetta, and when Shinohara asked Fukami what he would like to work on next, Fukami mentioned Black★Rock Shooter, as he really likes the 2012 version of the anime and collects Black★Rock Shooter-related merchandise. However, as it was difficult to produce a sequel for the said anime, Fukami wanted to find a different way to interpret huke's original work.
Realizing that there were no motorbike merchandise available for Black★Rock Shooter, Shinohara and Fukami decided to produce an anime featuring motorbikes in wilderness, something akin to Mad Max: Fury Road. huke and Tensho also contributed towards DAWN FALL's initial planning.
The background settings for DAWN FALL was decided since the beginning of development, but as it was deemed unsuitable to portray them smoothly in anime format, Fukami wrote a prequel named Black★★Rock Shooter BEFORE DAWN to help explain some of the lore set in the anime.[9]

Black★★Rock Shooter DAWN FALL has collaborated with multiple social network games in the form of time-limited events, namely Black Moon Extended,[10][11] Figure Fantasy,[12] Grand Summoners,[13] and Black★Rock Shooter FRAGMENT.[14] Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! also featured a time-limited tie-in by distributing a virtual avatar as a log-in bonus to commemorate the anime's airing.[15]
