Black★Rock Shooter (ブラック★ロックシューター, Burakku Rokku Shūtā) is a song written by ryo of supercell and performed by Hatsune Miku. The song features huke's eponymous character, with a music video hosted on Niconico since June 13, 2008.

History

huke uploaded the illustration to Pixiv and his personal blog on December 26, 2007.[1][2] The illustration inspired ryo to compose a song based on the character, surprising huke, who recognized ryo's previous works such as "Melt", when ryo contacted him for a collaborative project.[3][4]

Music composition and lyrics were both produced by ryo, while huke as a new member of supercell provided artwork and animations for the video. The whole project took approximately half a year to complete. Although huke did not provide explanations behind his character's creations, ryo managed to write the lyrics solely based on his drawing, which would closely match huke's feelings on how he recovered from artist's slump via Black★Rock Shooter.[3][4]

The music video was uploaded to NicoNico (then known as Nico Nico Douga) on June 13, 2008,[5] which surpassed one million views by the end of the year.[6][7] As of August 2021 the song "Black★Rock Shooter" was still among the top 30 of the most viewed Vocaloid songs on NicoNico.[8]

Lyrics

Japanese Romaji English
Where did you go?
Can you hear me?

あとどれだけ叫べばいいのだろう ato dore dake sakebeba ī nodarou How much more should I shout?
あとどれだけ泣けばいいのだろう ato dore dake nakeba ī nodarou How much more should I weep?
もうやめて わたしはもう走れない mō yamete watashi wa mō hashirenai That's enough, I can't run anymore.
いつか夢見た世界が閉じる itsuka yumemita sekai ga tojiru Someday the world I once dreamt of closes
Makkurade akari mo nai On this pitch-black
あるはずもないあの時の aru hazu mo nai ano toki no From the time that was never meant to be
希望が見えた気がした kibō ga mieta ki ga shita I felt like I had a glimpse of hope

ただ楽しかったあの頃を tada tanoshikatta anogoro o Of those times I really enjoyed
でも動けないよ demo ugokenai yo But I cannot move
闇を駆ける星に願いを yami o kakeru hoshininegai o I wish upon the star that shoots through the darkness
もう一度だけ走るから mōichido dake hashirukara Because I will run just one more time

怖くて震える声でつぶやく kowakute furueru koe de tsubuyaku I mutter in a frightened, quivering voice
わたしの名前を呼んで watashi no namaewoyonde Call my name
夜明けを抱く空 境界線までの距離 yoake o daku sora kyōkai-sen made no kyori The sky embracing dawn, the distance to the borderline
あともう一歩届かない ato mōippo todokanai One further step won't reach it

こらえた涙があふれそうなの 今下を向かないで koraeta namida ga afuresōna no konge o mukanai de The tears I've held back are about to overflow. Don't look down now
止まってしまう tomatte shimau Or I'll stop
未来を生きていたいんだ mirai o ikite itai nda I want to live the future
わかったの 思い出して wakatta no omoidashite I know. I remember,
強く 強く 信じるの tsuyoku tsuyoku shinjiru no And firmly, firmly believe it.

そうよ sō yo That's right

優しい匂い yasashī nioi That gentle fragrance
痛いよ 辛いよ 飲み込む言葉 itai yo tsurai yo nomikomu kotoba It hurts, it's hard swallowing down those words
Let my feet move!
世界を超えて sekai o koete Overtake the world

最初からわかっていた ここにいることを saisho kara wakatte ita koko ni iru koto o I knew it from the beginning that you'd be here
わたしのなかの 全ての勇気が watashi no naka no subete no yūki ga All the courage inside me
火をともして hi o tomo shite Lights a fire
もう逃げないよ mō nigenai yo I won't run away anymore
ひとりじゃないよ hitori janai yo You are not alone
声をあげて泣いたって構わない koe o agete naitatte kamawanai It doesn't matter if I raise my voice and weep
見ていてくれる mite ite kureru Watch me
今からはじまるの わたしの物語 ima kara hajimaru no watashi no monogatari My story starts now
