History
The song was first submitted in Japanese video site Nico Nico Douga in 2008, where it is embraced by Vocaloid fans. Later, the video embraced a wider audience when it reaches YouTube, where its two versions garnered a total of more than 2,500,000 views. The song and the designs also started to gain a fanbase, and much later, was performed by famous members of Nico Nico Douga in a number of versions, including a band edition which is performed together with a chorus of human singers and, occasionally, including Hatsune Miku herself.

Upon the release of the Black★Rock Shooter OVA, Hatsune Miku performs another version of the song, this time, Supercell utilizes Miku Append, a complement of the original Vocaloid program with additional features. This version is entitled "Black★Rock Shooter 2M Mix".

Lyrics
A Vocaloid song creator ryo was inspired by BRS and composed a song using Miku Hatsune, while huke created the movie for ryo. The video was a hit on Nico Nico Douga and YouTube, and this eventually led to the worldwide popularity of Black★Rock Shooter. Black★Rock Shooter tells of the narrator's despair and hopelessness as they wander aimlessly, searching for something important to them that they presumably lost. Eventually the narrator gains new hope and decides to move on into the future with courage. The video for the song became massively popular, featuring Black★Rock Shooter traveling through a bleak city and countryside, riding a motorbike and wielding weapons.

Ryo, member of Supercell, gained inspiration to write the song after seeing huke's works in his Pixiv account; at this stage, huke has already joined Supercell as part of their creative team. The song created was performed by Vocaloid Hatsune Miku, who also performs in the majority of Supercell's compositions. To tie in Miku with the song, huke makes a slight adjustment to Black★Rock Shooter's designs, adding the twin pigtails to her final design.

Black★Rock Shooter (ブラック★ロックシューター, Burakku Rokku Shūtā) is a song written by ryo of supercell and performed by Hatsune Miku. The song features huke's eponymous character, with a music video hosted on Niconico since June 13, 2008.

History

huke uploaded the illustration to Pixiv and his personal blog on December 26, 2007.[1][2] The illustration inspired ryo to compose a song based on the character, surprising huke, who recognized ryo's previous works such as "Melt", when ryo contacted him for a collaborative project.[3][4]

Music composition and lyrics were both produced by ryo, while huke as a new member of supercell provided artwork and animations for the video. The whole project took approximately half a year to complete. Although huke did not provide explanations behind his character's creations, ryo managed to write the lyrics solely based on his drawing, which would closely match huke's feelings on how he recovered from artist's slump via Black★Rock Shooter.[3][4]

The music video was uploaded to NicoNico (then known as Nico Nico Douga) on June 13, 2008,[5] which surpassed one million views by October.[6] On April 11 2010 the video reached its 3 million views milestone.[6] As of August 2021 the song "Black★Rock Shooter" was still among the top 30 of the most viewed Vocaloid songs on NicoNico.[7]
