Black Rock Shooter Wiki

Karli (カーリー Kārī), also known as CKRY in Japanese localization, is one of the class-A aliens that are also known as the Seven Apostles in Black★Rock Shooter THE GAME.

Appearance[]

In appearance, Karli is a pale-skinned male with orange hair and a small beard, with a braid at his chin, and a steel-black spiked ornament at mouth height. He wears a massive black-colored armored suit with yellow trimming covering his entire body, which is adorned by spikes.

Like his younger sister Shizu, he does not display any notable ability except for his brute strength. Despite his bulky appearance, however, he is surprisingly quick on his feet.

Personality[]

Karli, at first glance, appears brutish and violent; however, he is actually still a logical being and is very reasonable. He speaks in gurgles, and the only ones who seem to be able to comprehend his speech are the other Apostles. He often acts as a chariot for SZZU.

History[]

Game Version[]

Karli as well as the other aliens sense Mii's death soon after Stella defeats her in San Francisco.[1] When Mazuma also falls to Stella in New York two days later, Karli and Shizu neblade him on the spot to learn of his encounter with Stella.[2]

The twins then head for Moscow to wait for Stella. Karli senses Nafe's presence in the area and informs Shizu accordingly,[3] but loses track of Nafe shortly after.[4] When Stella reaches the Draco's crash site, Karli tries to ambush her, but is stopped by Shizu in order to allow her to bid farewell to the dying Primary Support Service members. In the meantime the twins realize that Nafe tries to spoil the General's plan and take Stella away from them, and knowing the possible consequence of General killing them both they try to reason with Stella and instructs her to listen to them, only to witness Nafe's Pink Rabbit Armament killing Rothcall Shepard, the last human on Earth, in front of Stella. An enraged Stella sees Shizu being responsible for the deaths of Rothcall as well as her other comrades, and fights both Shizu and Karli. The twins are overpowered by Stella, with Karli immobilizing Shizu as he falls on top of her. As Nafe arrives at the scene Shizu pleads to Nafe to save them and that she will not inform the General of Nafe's plans, yet Nafe has no intention of helping the alien twins, and instead obliterates the two with a barrage from multiple Pink Rabbits.[5]

Manga Version[]

At some point in time, Karli lost his sight by an unexplained cause that is tied to the General's actions or influence, which in turn becomes one of Shizu's motivations to want to defy her and to break free from her.[6]

Shortly after Mii's death, Karli joins Shizu to observe Mazuma's hunt on Stella. When Mazuma asks if either of the siblings have watched the movie Big Snipe, Karli explains that he has and explains the plot with Shizu translating for him, much to Mazuma's affirmation. The two then wait for an opportunity to kill and neblade Mazuma to prevent him from capturing Stella for the General, before attempting to contact the PSS directly on their own volition.[7]

The siblings fail to catch Stella and Rothcall in time as the latter two take off in the Brunhild. After communicating with Nafe, who secretly supports the siblings' revolt remotely, Karli comforts Shizu on various issues, such as having to kill a fellow alien and her low confidence in the revolt's success. They later manage to contact the remaining majority of the PSS in person, and convince them that they have a common enemy, who would allow them to travel together in the Draco for Antarctica.[6]

Rothcall is unaware of the PSS' alliance with the rogue aliens and is deeply distrustful of his new allies, but is convinced that Shizu is not hiding ulterior motives after she shows Karli's conditions to him, which are implied to be inflicted by the General.[6] On Shizu's advice, Karli helps train Stella on martial arts, who in turn learns to understand his speech without needing Shizu to translate for her.[8]

Two months later, thousands of Armaments arrive at the surviving humans' hideout. Shizu instructs Rothcall and Stella to escape while she, Karli, and the remaining members of the PSS hold out the attack. Despite Stella's initial protest, Karli ensures her that they will be fine. The siblings cut down the Armaments with ease, but are unaware of who is leading the attack, only to realize the fact too late that the General herself is on the field, who appears and inflict mortal wounds on them.[8]

Despite losing the lower halves of their bodies, Shizu and Karli exchange final words and express no regrets for their actions, with Karli being able to see his sister once again. One of Nafe's Pink Rabbits arrives soon after, with Nafe telling them via the Armament that she could not send help earlier due to the General's unexpected intervention, and she will eliminate the siblings in order to keep her association with them a secret from the General. Both Karli's and Shizu's bodies are obliterated by Nafe's Pink Rabbit afterwards.[9]

Shizu rides on top of Karli as a single enemy unit, and in this form the two serve together as Stage 3: Moscow's final boss in the mission "Critical Trouble". Most of the attacks come from Shizu, whose sword glows and extends before she starts her basic attacks, which include closing in for sword slashes or shooting fireballs with a sword swipe from a distance. "Sky Crusher Lightning" (天崩雷) does not deal damage directly, but summons lightning that will arrive with a delay. The lightning strike is preceded by the message "Thunder pours from the sky." (天空より雷鳴が降り注ぐ) as well as a white flash that appears below Stella. The player should dodge immediately after seeing the white flash, or else the resulting hit can inflict Shocked (ショック) status ailment, which renders Stella unable to take any action and become open to attacks temporarily. At low health, Shizu will trigger "Sweet Chat" (スウィートチャット), allowing her and Karli to heal over a period of time.

Depleting Shizu's and Karli's health for the first time will move on to the second half of the battle, where they can unleash their signature move "Yellow Tiger Chemotactic" (黄虎走駆). This move is difficult to dodge, hence the player should use the narrow window of time to block the two hits and heal when necessary.[10]

Development[]

huke originally designed Karli as a bearded gentleman, but he didn't feel that would make him interesting in gameplay, so he went off for a different direction instead, and made the character more of a masochist in contrast to Shizu's sadistic approach to her brother.[11]
